| November 8, Election Day - one week later With Election Day now a week behind us, we can now begin to understand more about the trends of Plymouth County and the entire U.S. Across the country, Republicans did well, from re-electing George Bush to a second term to adding legislative and gubernatorial seats to the Republican column. In Plymouth County, while none of the new crop of candidates was able to unseat their incumbent Democrat opponents, there were challenges mounted in many districts - often for the first time in quite some time. Our current group of Republican legislators was re-elected -- Bob Hedlund, Vinnie deMacedo, Susan Gifford and Dan Webster. Incumbents enjoy many benefits that can make it difficult to unseat them - name recognition, press coverage and established political teams and finances. Congratulations to all of the Republican challengers, as you forced lively discussions on local and state issues of importance. The biggest surprise was in the race for Plymouth County Sheriff, where Republican newcomer Joseph McDonald edged out incumbent Democrat Joseph McDonough by about a thousand votes. (Note, Mr. McDonough issued a Press Release on Friday conceding the race.) |
